Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown

Overview

The inherent challenges of group stage tennis often result in at this point of the season-ending championships we’re often left scratching our heads, searching around for a mathematical tool and striving to determine the brain-busting potential outcomes for advancement. However this evening's contest between Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is easy. It’s a straight shootout: the successful player secures a final four matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this championship finale; the loser heads out.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has claimed the title at this tournament twice before and leads their head-to-head with six victories against three defeats, winning both the games they've played on an covered hard surface.

But … this is the surface on which Felix has secured most of his championships, he’s riding a high after his impressive recovery against Shelton on recently and he defeated the German in the US Championships early stage in August. Plus, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which provides an additional advantage in Auger-Aliassime's favor.

If Zverev holds back, as he did against the Italian, and the Canadian presses the European player with his powerful serves and confident shots, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the one-time phenom who was earlier slated ahead of the Spanish and Italian stars to succeed the Big Three – who obtains the uncertain distinction of competing with the top-ranked player on Saturday.

Action commences: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
