Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and City Celebrations

Local organizers have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G match featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's proud history of championing equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Organizers are committed to making sure all fans are welcomed in the city throughout the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
