Italian Watchdog Criticizes Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable

A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call completely unjustified cost hikes for lift tickets this cold-weather period, cautioning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.

Significant Cost Rises Across Italy

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.

Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges

At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The cost of renting ski equipment has also increased, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases

The consumer association president, leading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.

"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.

He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, altogether.

Tourism Decline and Broader Context

He noted a sharp decline in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to rising costs.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.

International Event Background

The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the international event.

"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Olympics," he declared.
