An esteemed Russian army officer has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.
The attack took place on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle was set off, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators stated that one theory under investigation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Location of the Incident
Personnel have been sent to the location, which is said to be in a southern district of the city.
Accounts suggest the detonation happened in a parking area near a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the onset of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This latest event echoes other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a Ukrainian source in the past linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.
The conflict has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
